As a general guide, consider 120–140 cm for four people, 160–180 cm for six, and 200 cm or more for eight. Chair width and leg placement will affect the final capacity.
Where possible, allowing approximately 80–90 cm around the table gives chairs room to move comfortably. The required clearance may vary with your space.
Metal legs create a more industrial look, while wooden legs feel warmer. In either case, the leg position should allow everyone to sit comfortably.
